One of the most common questions we’re asked is, “When should I start puppy school?”

The honest answer is — as soon as you can.

For most puppies, that means starting at around eight weeks of age, after they’ve had their first vaccination. And in our experience, the earlier you begin, the easier everything becomes.

Why starting early really matters

Puppies go through a critical learning period between roughly three and sixteen weeks of age. During this time, they are forming opinions about the world. They are deciding what is safe, what is normal, and how they should respond to new situations.

If they meet friendly people, calm dogs, hear different noises and learn how to cope with everyday life during this stage, they tend to grow into confident, stable adults.

If they don’t, small uncertainties can turn into big problems later on.

We see it often — puppies that were “waiting until vaccinations were finished” or “too young to train” come to us later with fear, over-excitement, biting, or difficulty settling. It’s never too late to train, but prevention is far easier than repair.

Isn’t eight weeks too young?

Not at all.

In fact, eight to twelve weeks is the ideal time to begin structured puppy training. At that age, puppies are curious, engaged and eager to learn. They haven’t yet practised unwanted behaviours for months. They’re still shaping their habits.

Well-run puppy schools (like ours) operate in a clean, controlled environment and require appropriate vaccinations before attendance. The social and behavioural benefits of early training far outweigh the controlled risk of attending a structured class.

What if my puppy is already older?

If your puppy is twelve to sixteen weeks old, start immediately.

If they’re older than that, still start. It simply means we may need to work a little harder on certain behaviours.

The biggest mistake is waiting for the “perfect” time.

What makes our Puppy School different?

At Paws Claws & Tails, our Puppy School on the Sunshine Coast isn’t just about teaching sit and stay.

We focus on real-life skills that owners genuinely struggle with at home. We help you with:

  • Mouthing and biting
  • Jumping up on people
  • Calm behaviour around visitors
  • Loose lead walking foundations
  • Recall training
  • Settling in the house
  • Confidence around other puppies
  • Practical handling skills (for vets and grooming)

Our classes are structured, supportive and practical. We guide you step-by-step so you understand not just what to do, but why you’re doing it.

You won’t be left standing in a corner unsure how to manage your puppy. We coach you through real situations and give you the tools to continue confidently at home.

Puppy school is really for owners

Your puppy will learn, of course.

But more importantly, you will learn how to raise a well-mannered, confident dog. That early education makes all the difference over the next 10–15 years of your dog’s life.

Good habits formed early prevent stress, frustration and behaviour problems later.

So what’s the best age to start?

Eight weeks old.

And if your puppy is already older, the best time is now.

If you’re on the Sunshine Coast and you want structured, practical guidance that prepares your puppy for real life — not just a few tricks — we would love to help.

Our Puppy School classes are designed to give you clarity, confidence and a calm, well-adjusted puppy.
